R. CHAFEY. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4". S# 310600E. The 28" barrels are marked "HUNTER ARMS CO FULTON N.Y." at rear of matted rib. Barrel flats are stamped with S# and grade. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with crown steel logos. Case hardened regular weight action is engraved in later Grade 2 style with game birds in circles. "L.C. SMITH" is on each lockplate. Trigger guard bow is factory engraved "J.R. Chafey" (no reference found after quick search). S# is on tang. Quilt figured and lightly streaked European walnut, capped long pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over old fossilized Silver pad, possibly original. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter ejector forend with inlet ebony tip has usual "J" spring release with secondary latch in guitar shaped escutcheon. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .726. R .726. Restriction: L .034 (full). R .016 (mod). Wall thickness: L .031. R .029. STOCK: DAH: 2-7/8". DAC: 1-3/4". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-1/2". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 2 oz. CONDITION: fair to fine. Barrels retaining most of their original blue. Action and lockplates have over 60% original muted case color. Trigger guard has about 40% original blue. Stocks retain most of their original varnish finish with a large number of marks, dings and scratches; some fairly deep. Pad is solid and deeply crazed. Checkering moderately worn. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is tight. Mechanically fine. Buttstock is cracked from left rear of top tang to about 1/2" behind left lockplate and this crack does flex. A good interesting gun that needs some TLC to put it right. (24-5323/MGM). CURIO. $800-1,200.
