Cal 45-70. S #319161. Bbl. 32 5/8". This rifle appears to be assembled from a mix of various Trapdoor & musket parts. Lockplate is from an 1863 Springfield musket. Breechblock is from an 1879 style trapdoor. Upper tang screw is a replacement. Rear band has slot on top and is likely from a carbine model. Rear of bbl. is marked w/ Springfield proofs. 1879 rear sight graduated to 1200 yards. Blade front sight. Slotted ramrod is present. Bottom mounted sling swivels and stacking hook. Walnut stock set. Top of stock is marked "440" & left side of butt has a "14" rack number. CONDITION: sanded walnut stock has some chipping in ramrod channel, a couple deep gouges on right side of butt, couple small cracks near lock, scattered dings & handling marks. Metal is turning to a brown patina w/ scattered oxidation & a few spots of light pitting. Worn bore w/ scattered pitting. (01-21113/MJC). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
