VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY MUSKET. Cal. 70. NSN. Bbl. 42". Classic Confederate 1861-1862 “braised bolster” conversion from flint to percussion of 1817 dated Virginia Manufactory Musket. This musket was just found in a local Maine estate, untouched since the war & little doubt a Union souvenir brought home by a soldier. Lockplate of musket marked at tail “RICHMOND 1817” & "VIRGINIA / MANUFACTORY” forward of hammer. Matching assembly “O” found on all 3 bbl. bands, sideplate, trigger guard & buttplate. This type of alteration most likely performed by S.C. Robinson, Richmond, VA. See other examples described & pictured in Murphy & Madaus’ "Confederate Rifles and Muskets" on pages 617-636. CONDITION: good to very good overall "as found" condition. Dark patina w/ light pitting, markings all discernable, though "Manufactory" is light. Ramrod has broken tip, otherwise 100 % original & complete. Good mechanics & dark smooth pitted bore. (01-16920/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
