ZUTZU JAPANESE MATCHLOCK TARGET GUN.
Cal. 48. NSN. The 40" forged iron barrel has octagonal breech section, which transitions to round then to an octagonal flared muzzle and is fitted with traditional Japanese sights. Barrel is attractively engraved with a classic Japanese scene of mountains at breech. A coiled brass inlaid dragon is through central portion, with silver, copper and gold inlaid clouds, etc. toward muzzle. Pan has hinged brass cover. Heavy brass breech area is also engraved. Lock with long main spring has floral serpentine retainer at rear. Full length stock that appears to be evergreen oak is brass mounted with many fancy inlays along top of comb and bottom of forend. A Japanese warrior is inlet on right side of butt and a large chrysanthemum is on left. Other flowers serve as wood protection for lock mounting pins. This treatment extends along barrel channel with pins for barrel mounting. There is a rectangular stamped in cartouche (maker's mark ?) on left side and some later incised Japanese characters in stock under rear sight. CONDITION: good. Barrel showing old oxidation, brass nicely toned, stock shows good overall wear with some losses at muzzle and some cracks on left side near breech. Bore is lightly pitted, lock a bit sticky. Pivot pin for pan cover is missing. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22460/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-2,000.
