BY ROBERTSON. Cal. 36. S# NSN. William Robertson was known to be working in Philadelphia at 102 Carpenter Street in 1829. This rifle has 29-1/2" octagon barrel with under rib holding one standing left rear and silver blade front sights. Top flat is engraved "ROBERTSON PHILAD.a". Unvented breech plug has scroll on top flat. Breech iron is nicely engraved with shaded scroll and shell motif. Front spring lock with flat faced percussion hammer is engraved with matching scroll within geometric borders; "ROBERTSON" is at front. Single trigger is set. Trigger guard with pineapple finial has finger spur on bow and curl at rear forming pistol grip. Crotch figured American walnut stock with German silver tip has swept right hand cheekpiece and point pattern checkering at grip. Stock is iron mounted. Crescent buttplate with square top tang has 13-1/4" LOP and 5" return with pineapple finial. A circular patchbox with fancy steel surround is on right side of butt. All furniture shows some open scroll engraving. Stock attaches to barrel with captive sidebolt through oval German silver escutcheons. Hickory ramrod with German silver tip mounts through two plain pipes and well filed steel thimble. CONDITION: good to very good. Barrel with most of its original finish shows light cleaning with salt and pepper appearance. Other iron parts also show cleaning to silver and pewter gray. Stock shows oil added over what appears to be most original varnish finish with some dark areas and scattered marks. Bore is fair to good; strong rifling; dark in grooves. Mechanically good. There is an old crack running from lock pin on left side up to rear of barrel; otherwise stock is sound. (01-26483/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,000.
