BERRY. Cal. 58 - 8 groove rifling. S# NSN. This classic rifle made either by Peter Berry the elder working in Dauphin County, PA 1786-96 or more likely his son of Annville, PA 1800-1807; has 50 1/2" half octagon half round barrel fitted with "V" notch rear and long brass bead front sights. Top flat is engraved "P. Berry". Lock, which appears to be in original flint, has good file decoration on lockplate and is fitted with serpentine cock, inset faceted pan and bridled friction frizzen. Feather spring is also decoratively filed and has bulbous finial with teat. Stock, of relatively plain hard maple is brass mounted. The most striking feature is the multi pierced patchbox which has distinctive Berry type sideplates either side of plain rectangular cover. Release button is in 2 1/2" brass return on toeline. Buttplate has some decorative filing. Beveled trigger guard has curl toward rear forming grip. Sideplate has fancy ogee outline similar to other known Berry rifles. Stock has raised mouldings around lock and sideplate with distinctive large drop points. Raised carved scrolls are around barrel tang, in front of cheekpiece, patchbox finial as well as large flourishes behind cheekpiece. Edge of cheekpiece has long triangular brass plate. Stock extends to muzzle with 2" brass cap and attaches to barrel with four captive brass sidebolts. Hickory ramrod is held by two beaded octagonal pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: good. Iron parts are nearly all dark brown patina. Wood shows light refinishing with added oil over some minor repair of cracks along barrel channel and another repaired crack through grip area. Brass is nicely toned. Interior of lock shows replaced main spring, sear spring and some work on sear tail otherwise, lock and barrel appear to be in their original flint configuration. Bore is fair to good, pitted with considerable ramrod wear at muzzle, lock is good. (01-21954/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,500-6,500.
