MAINE. This document is for the appointment of a Justice of the Peace in Maine. It is signed by James Cochran, the Deputy Secretary of State. It was then approved and signed by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. General Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine Infantry was one of the major heroes in the defining battle of the Civil War, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He later became Governor of the State of Maine and served his home state in many capacities until his death in 1914. The document has a sight size of just over 14" x 9 1/2". It is easily read and bears the bold signature "J.L. Chamberlain". It is framed with a copy of a photograph of Chamberlain in his Civil War Major General’s uniform. There is also a short biography of Chamberlain in the frame. The overall measurements of the frame are 24" x 20". CONDITION: the document has not been examined out of the frame but shows no damage and only minor fold creases. The signature, as well as all other entries on the document, are bold and quite legible. The frame shows only handling wear. (02-23292-2/BF). $700-1,000.
