A very large, heavy and well-made winter bearskin coat of the late 19th or 20th century. The outside of the coat is covered with dark brown fur with lighter brown fur highlights. The collar and cuffs are more closely cropped, lighter brown fur. There are five wooden toggle buttons down each side of the front of the coat, forming a secure closure. There are slightly diagonal slash pockets on each side of the front at about the midpoint. The sleeves have interior wool cuffs and a brownish green-striped polish cotton lining. The body lining appears to be a polished black cotton with zigzag sewn lines down the entire length of the coat. The pocket bags appear to be a heavy, dark muslin material. There is an interior pocket on the left side with a tag that reads "FROM THE NATIONAL TANNING COMPANY DES MOINES, IOWA." CONDITION: the outside of the coat has a fine appearance, with only scattered minor losses to the fur. The lining appears quite solid, and the stitching is nearly completely intact. An attractive example of a bearskin coat that was once popular in the colder climes of America. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (02-23546/BF). $800-1,200.
