ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY REVOLVER FROM SUTHERLAND COLLECTION. Cal. 36. S# 20399. This revolver was made in 1864 & is pictured on page 170 of Sutherland and Wilson’s landmark 1971 text “The Book of Colt Firearms”. Its mate (SN 21838 ex-George Gamble collection) is owned by the Gene Autry Museum w/ same inscription on inside of trigger guard “Aloys Seinen Johann”, identical engraving & carved grips; obviously made as a pair even though the Autry is cased. Standard configuration 7.5" bbl. w/ 1 line New York address, engraved most likely by Louis Nimschke w/ full coverage arabesque scrolls having pearled background & his signature fan on top of backstrap. Metal silver plated w/ exception of gold washed cylinder, hammer, loading arm & trigger. Exceptional relief carved & checkered ivory grips showcase high relief eagle & shield on left side. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: custom wood & iron display stand. CONDITION: fine overall, matching serial numbers found on bbl., frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, arbor & wedge. Revolver retains most of its original silver plating. The gold plate on hammer trigger & loading arm is mostly found in large traces in protected areas. The gold on cylinder appears professionally touched up for presentation, safety pins smashed. Original certifiable antique ESA-exempt ivory grips are well fit w/ tiny chips to inside toes. Mechanically fine w/ crisp bright bore. PROVENANCE: Ex Robert Q. Sutherland Collection. (01-19962/JS). ANTIQUE. $30,000-40,000.
