Cal. 40 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 40" full oct., signed “JM”. Overall length 55 1/2". Elaborate 4 piece brass patchbox engraved w/ 13 piercings. Has 31 silver inlays along w/ 5 1/4" long silver saddle plate, 5" comb inlay w/ 2 piercings & a silver cheekpiece inlay w/ 6 piercings. 8 1/2" Brass fully engraved toeplate. Engraved percussion lock has dbl. set triggers. 12 Of the silver inlays are fish. A truly handsome gun. Attributed to John Markes (1820-1876) in Union County. CONDITION: aside from the ordinary shrinkage crack at the toe, appears to be in untouched original condition. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19561/RG). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
