A5 SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4". S# 310332 (1950). The 29-1/2" plain barrel choked full, is marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE HERSTAL-BELGIQUE" on top rear, in front of 1-1/2" triangle of exceptionally well cut shaded scroll. Blued A5 action is also engraved with near full coverage of this scroll which is outlined by very attractive border of flush gold inlaid individual double ended scrolls, separated by small three rayed sunbursts. This eye catching treatment surrounds ovate game scenes on sides with four mallard ducks flying around a pond on left and four pheasant, one appears to be falling from the sky, on right. Scroll and gold treatment extends to trigger guard bow and tang. This fine work appears to be of factory quality however, a brief search cannot find where this pattern or this grade was offered. Also, no engraver's signature is found so it must be assumed that this is custom work. Round knob buttstock of relatively plain European walnut measures 14-1/2" over brown A&F marked pad. Fancy pattern flat top checkering with fleur-de-lis patterns is at grip and a vacant gold oval is on toeline. Forend wood with finger grooves appears to be of standard grade. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 2-5/8". DAC: 1-5/8". LOP: 14-1/2". WEIGHT: 8 lb. 6 oz. CONDITION: fine as custom finished. Barrel retaining nearly all of an old re-blue. Action retains nearly all of a custom blue most likely applied after engraving was finished. There are a few small scattered patches of rust, mostly on left side above trigger. Stocks retain most of an old oil finish, possibly original, with added oil. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically good. (23-2051/MGM). C&R. $3,500-5,500.
