LONDON & CALCUTTA. Cal. 58. S# 5086. The 7" rifled and casehardened octagon bbl. is fitted with German silver underrib holding bridled steel ramrod. Side of rib is engraved "5086". Top flat is engraved "Manton & Co." "London & Calcutta" (John Augustus working 1809-1852). Boxlock type action with percussion hammer on right side is also casehardened. A steel belt hook is screwed to left side. Hook attaching point is flanked by scroll engraving which also appears on top tang and right side of action. Bbl. and action are stamped with Birmingham proofs. European walnut checkered bag grip has German silver cap box as grip cap which has relief cast grotesque head hinged cover. A vacant German silver oval is at top of grip. CONDITION: very good. Bbl. and action retaining most of their original casehardening color considerably faded and grayed with some cleaned brown patches on right side. Grip appears to be refinished. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: By descent, from the Albert Boardman II of Rye, N.Y. (01-20809/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
