BAYONET BY JOHN REA "FAIR MAID OF KENT". Cal. 90, 1-1/2"at muzzle. S# NSN. John Rea was working in London between 1777-1812. It appears this well made gun was from his earlier days. 16" brass cannon has London proofs and "IR" stamped at breech end. Top of barrel is mounted with 13" triangular spring loaded bayonet with retaining slide on barrel tang. Top of barrel is engraved with some scroll and "London". Early military style lock with serpentine cock, integral rounded pan, unbridled friction frizzen and feather spring with foliate finial is engraved with some scroll. "I" "REA" is in front of cock. Fruitwood stock has early style handrail comb and pronounced sweep to toeline. Stock has raised mouldings with shell carving around barrel tang. Brass mounts also show engraving with one piece scroll decorated sideplate engraved "Fair Maid of Kent". Double beaded trigger guard has acorn finial. Small fruitwood ramrod with brass tip mounts through beaded pipe and thimble. CONDITION: good as refinished. Steel and iron cleaned to pitted silver color. Brass shows considerable cleaning with engraving rubbed. Stock has old oil refinish with many marks and scratches. Bore and lock are good, as is bayonet. (01-27499/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
