MEDALS, HAT, BELT & SASH. The uniform is heavy red wool with white collar, cuffs & piping. The collar has a shield on both sides showing 3 scimitars on each. The shoulder tabs are edged in white & have the brass designation “T 7 ESSEX”. There are 7 British Arms buttons down the front and 6 at the tail. The right sleeve has 3 bullion chevrons with crossed British flags above & a crown at the top indicating the rank of Color Sergeant. The uniform has a white buff belt with a 2 piece buckle that has a lion in the center with the words “DIEU ET MON DROIT” around the outer edge. There is a white leather bayonet frog attached to the belt. The red wool shoulder sash has 2 medals attached to it. The first medal is a Queens South Africa Medal with “BELFAST”, “WITTEBERGEN”, & “CAPE COLONY” bars. The second medal is a Kings South Africa Medal with “SOUTH AFRICA 1901” & “SOUTH AFRICA 1902” bars. Both medals are named on the edge “6353 PTE J.SWEEMEY, 1st RL: IRISH REGT”. The helmet has a spiked top with quatrefoil base. The front plate features a multi rayed 8 pointed star with a castle in the center, surrounded by the word “DEVONSHIRE”. A chain linked chinstrap with Tudor rose side buttons. The interior of the helmet has several stamps & inscriptions along with the date 1903. CONDITION: the uniform remains quite solid but does show moth damage primarily to the piping & white cuff facings. Medals show tarnish but no damage. Helmet & belt show light wear.
