Overall length: 28 1/2". Blade length: 23”. A fine example of a British P1856 saber bayonet of German manufacture that was used with the Enfield rifle. Enfield rifles were imported to America in large quantities by both the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War. Plain blade has a single wide fuller near the spine. There is a small stamp near the hilt that resembles a hot air balloon. Iron crossguard numbered “836” with muzzle ring at the top. Iron pommel in the shape of a bird’s head. 2-Piece black composite grips held on by 4 pins on one side and 3 pins with an iron spring on the other. Iron mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. Hilt has a somewhat darker patina. Grips are undamaged. Scabbard body is a bit flaked but sturdy. Mounts have a dark patina. (02-20067/BF). $250-400.
