BARRELS AND LOCKS. Cal. 20 Bore. S# NSN. It appears this gun was finished in England using metal work from France or Belgium and has 32" twist barrels with deeply sunken rib. Barrels are octagonal at breech ends and transition to sixteen sided, then to round through wedding bands. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with various marks and initials which appear to be French. A Belgian mark is definitely on left flat. Bottoms are stamped with London black powder proofs both definitive and view. Breech iron has foliate engraving and deep sighting groove as often found on French guns. Locks have slightly chamfered arched plates with teats at rear and feature inset gull wing type semi-waterproof pans, bridled frizzens and rollers on feather springs with ball and spear finials. Serpentine cocks are line and foliate engraved and more foliage appears on lock tails. Classic British pineapple finials are on trigger plate and thimble. Trigger guard engraved with sea monster on bow has grip which terminates in a coil to support hand. Steel buttplate has long scroll engraved top tang which matches engraving on trigger guard but not breech iron or locks. Stock of dense European walnut has swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece and typical British square checkering at grip and forend. Stock attaches to barrels with captive side bolt through oval silver escutcheons. Ebony ramrod with horn tip mounts through two beaded pipe and matching thimble. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 2-3/16". DAC: 1-1/4"+. CAST: about 5/8" off. LOP: 14-5/8". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 15 oz. CONDITION: fine. Barrels retaining over 90% of what appears to be a dramatic re-brown. Locks are smooth gray brown which is possibly the result of a case hardening process. Stock retains most of its original oil finish. Furniture shows cleaning to light brown and gray. Bores are good with scattered pitting. Locks are fine and complete. Most likely this gun is a very good shooter. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26120/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-6,000.
