This type of goggle was manufactured during WWI to protect the faces of soldiers from artillery shrapnel and splinters. Splinter goggles were also worn by tank drivers for the same purpose. This type was manufactured with a leather-covered face on the outside and a padded goat skin reverse. It is attached with cotton ties, and there is a chainmail lower face protector. There were 22,000 of this style splinter goggles manufactured in early 1917. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: these goggles come with a plexiglass display stand. CONDITION: leather is nearly completely intact but does have some minor abrasions. Chainmail is complete. Goat skin lining is stained but complete. Cotton ties are nearly undamaged. (02-23077/BF). $1,200-1,400.
