MAINE "REMEMBER THE MAINE". Circa late 19th, early 20th century. The carved and painted figural eagle plaque with a banner and left facing figure has an off-color white painted surface highlighted in red and blue, the banner reads "Remember the Maine". The Maine was a famous battleship that was destroyed in the late 19th century off the coast of Cuba and persipitated in the short-lived Spanish-American War. Originally sold at auction in the 1970s, when at that time belonged to Marius Peladeau; the curator of the renowned Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. SIZE: The eagle is approx. 26 1/2" w. From the bottom of the eagle to the top of the banner is approx. 8" h. CONDITION: generally very good. There is a slight hairline separation on the banner. Paint is strong over the entire surface.
