Cal. 12 Ga. S# 4628 (Ca. 1898 Boss Book). The 30" dovetailed barrels are engraved "Boss & Co 73, St. James's Street. London" on narrow swamped game rib which is gold inlaid "2". The "2" also appears on top lever and forend tip. Barrel flats are stamped with original London black powder proofs and year 2000 Birmingham nitro re-proofs for 2-3/4" chambers at 850 BAR. S#'s are deeply stamped on bottoms of barrels. Case hardened square back sidelock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators and double triggers. Action and lockplates are engraved in typical Boss "house" style by Sumners with 18 rose bouquets in a field of fine scroll. Each lockplate is engraved "Boss & Co" on scrolled ribbon and shaded rectangles under barrel flats are engraved "BOSS'S PATENT". Trigger guard with matching scroll on bow has S# in relief on tang. Dark, finely marbled and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-5/8" over checkered wood butt and features well shaped drop points, closely spaced grip checkering and a vacant gold oval. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release is fitted with Boss' reknowned ejector system that lifts cartridges clear from breech ends of barrels for easy access. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .729. R .729. Restriction: L .001 (cyl). R .002 (cyl). Wall thickness: L .028. R .028. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/4". DAC: 1-7/16". CAST: about 5/8" off. LOP: 14-5/8". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 12 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in a period, possibly original, leather case with brass corners, lined in green cloth. A large correct period paper Boss label is in lid. Case contains an ebony handled chamber brush, 2 new snap caps, ebony handled turn screw, new Purdey marked square oil bottle, two piece beech cleaning rod with mops and brushes and a Rangoon jelly bottle. A plastic bag contains an old replaced firing pin and some screws. CONDITION: fine as nicely refurbished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a best re-black most likely done at the time of re-proof. Action and lockplates are cleaned to pewter gray. Engraving remains clear. Stocks retain nearly all of a good hand rubbed oil finish. Checkering competently re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny with some light striations toward breech ends of both barrels. No other problems are noted. Action is tight; barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is good, rather dark with many stains and rubs. Old straps and handle are fair to good. Interior cloth is very good with some rubs and light soiling. Label is fine, foxed and with some light soiling. Old accessories are generally fine. (25-4348/MGM). CURIO. $9,000-13,000.
