Cal. 44. S#18301. Standard configuration of popular Civil War army revolver, 6” round proofed barrel, hinged frame, maker & patent marked on either side. About 20,000 of these revolvers were purchased by U.S. Army & most saw service. This is a fine survivor, retaining most of its original finish, cased and stamped by owner “R. Knowles”. There are 20 Union soldiers that fit that initial & name and several cavalrymen among those. Casing, green baize lined, and compartmented with single cavity brass Starr bullet mold, pack of .44 cartridges, decorated brass powder flask, cap tin, and some loose 44 caliber round balls. CONDITION: fine overall, retaining about 60% blue finish, balance mottled plum/gray. Markings are crisp. Grips are well-fit w/ bright, crisp inspector cartouches. Mechanically fine w/ bright shiny bore. Casing is very good as refinished, high luster varnish, missing lock escutcheon. Cartridge pack is poor, bulging from probably being wet, but label is good. The mold has same small inspection initial “B” as found on revolver. (01-22881/JS). $3,000-4,000.
