Cal. 31. S# 74566. Mfg. 1853. This example is housed in a period retailers case that has an added brass plaque that reads... " THIS COLT'S REVOLVER WAS CARRIED BY CAPT. JOHN BURGESS 74TH N.Y.V. (5TH EXCELSIOR) DURING MANY OF THE BLOODIEST BATTLES OF THE "GREAT REBELLION". There is no other supporting documentation. The barrel is 5" with bracketed 2-line barrel address " ADDRESS SAM COLT/NEW-YORK CITY". The 5 shot cylinder has in roll stamped with the stagecoach scene and has worn cylinder pins. The frame has the standard "COLTS/PATENT" stamped. The shoulder of the trigger guard strap is stamped with a "x" as is the trigger guard rear web. The forward trigger guard web is marked with a "u". The straps are brass with silver plating. Grips are original Colt with indian inked "4566" found in the back strap channel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: The pistol is housed in an compartmentalized period retailers case, unmarked plain pistol powder flask, & iron Colt's patent bullet mold. CONDITION: Overall fair. Straps retain approx 15% of the original silver plating remaining mostly in the protected areas. Other metal surfaces are mostly void of finish with traces remaining in the most protected of areas and freckled spotty old oxidation. Cylinder scene is mostly legible with some portions obscured with some spotty old oxidation. Original grip varnish is present with some hand and edge wear. Case exterior is overall good with an old crack on the lid and base with some handling marks. Interior is missing some of the dividers and the showing some heavy tattering with loss of material.
