REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 118823. Popular Colt variation with 3" octagonal barrel, 2-line New York City address & brass bead front sight, made without loading lever and long known to collectors as the "Wells Fargo" model. This model falls into two serial ranges, and this range made mid 1850s often has a small "8" stamped under serial number on barrel and frame as seen on this example. Standard configuration, five shot cylinder with rolled Stagecoach holdup scene, silver plated grip frame, varnished walnut grips. This example was manufactured 1856. Walnut casing is compartmented for revolver, two sided eagle flask, two cavity "Colt patent" mold, ELY cap tin, & L-shaped combination tool. CONDITION: good-very good overall. Revolver has no original finish and is overall gray iron patina, all matching, good markings other than S# on butt is missing, cylinder retains discernible Stagecoach hold up scene. Grip frame retains about 10% original silver plating, grips retain over half their original factory varnish. Mechanically fine with crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Robin Rapley 2003, Collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-23986/JS). $5,000-7,000.
