PISTOLS IMPORTED BY EYLAND & HAYDEN MADE BY W. & G. CHANCE OF LONDON. Cal. 52. S# 130 (bottom of both barrels). W. Chance worked between 1830-60. These anti-bellum pistols are engraved "Imported By Eyland & Hayden Charleston S. C." in script on top flats of 10" octagonal barrels with under ribs. Bottom of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs "RH" and S# "130". Scroll engraved breech plugs do not have blow outs. Breech irons engraved with semi-relief shaded scroll have integral "U" notch rear sights. Front spring locks with flat faced hammers and back sliding safetys are also scroll engraved. "W & G Chance" "LONDON" is at the front of each lockplate. Triggers are set. Stocks with checkered bag grips have steel trigger guards with finger spurs. German silver mounts include nose caps, thimbles, sidebolt escutcheons and vacant shaped ovals at tops of grips. Ebony ramrods with German silver tips are held by plain pipes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: guns are housed in their possibly original mahogany case with dual hook closure. A shaped brass medallion on top is engraved "WE". Case is lined in scarlet velvet and contains ebony and brass loading rod, steel nutcracker ball mould, and a copper bodied three compartment powder, ball and cap flask. There are two covered compartments with bone knobs, one contains some cast balls. CONDITION: good. Iron parts show light cleaning to gray brown patina over considerable pitting. Engraving remains clear. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original varnish finish with added oil and a myriad of knocks, dings scratches and bumps. Bores are dark, locks triggers and safetys all work. Case retains what appears to be most of its original exterior finish. Interior cloth is good with bumps and rubs. Accessories are good. PROVENANCE: William Orbello Collection of Dueling Pistols; Collection of John Montague; James D. Julia Auction Fall 2014 Lot 3378. (01-22819/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
