PISTOLS CARVED LIKE WHALES. Cal. .44. NSN. Accompanying this cased pair of pistols w/ accessories is a copy of 1973 letter supposedly from Peabody Museum stating provenance to whaling ship “Tempest”. The carvings & letter are spurious in our opinion & no warranty is offered as to authenticity, being sold unreserved w/ no minimum. Pistols measure 6" overall w/ 2" screw off bbls., Liège proofed; each bbl. stamped spuriously: “BARK TEMPEST RI”, elephant ivory grips are carved resembling heads of whales. Housed in green baize lined mahogany case w/ accessories. CONDITION: fair to good overall. Guns are cleaned & gray overall “certifiable ESA exempt” ivory grips are both cracked through near frame. Mechanically fine w/ good micro groove bores. Casing is poor, both hinges attached, baize lining soiled & ragged in areas, flask & wood cap container well as the guns, the other 2 tools are not original to the case and do not fit compartments. (01-19986/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
