RIFLE. Cal. about 50. NSN. Bbl. 42 5/8” octagon measuring 7/8” across flats at muzzle. Top flat is engraved “C B” w/ star stampings around front & rear sight areas. Muzzle has circle of punch marks. Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Engraved trade lock is marked w/ illegible name over “Warranted”. Plain trigger. Pin fastened full length Roman nose cheek piece stock of curly maple. Right side has brass rectangular lid pierced & segmented patchbox. Other brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toe plate, finger curl trigger guard, faceted thimble, 2 faceted pipes & nose cap. Brass ornamentation consists of engraved cheek piece plate & engraved side plate w/ initials “MSH”. German silver ornamentation is composed of old man in the moon on right side of forearm w/ geometric shape on left & oval wrist plate. Hardwood ramrod. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers has a listing for “BAUM, CHARLES, New Berlin, Pennsylvania. Flintlock and percussion Kentucky rifles. (Gabel)”. CONDITION: bbl. & lock have a patina appearance showing thinning on edges w/ scattered surface corrosion & pitting that becomes heaviest in breech area. Stock has an aged darkened original appearance w/ expected scratches & marks showing wood erosion above the lock. Forearm has a line of checking between thimble & first pipe. Small chips are found around the stock pins. Functioning lock. Dark pitted bore retains partially intact rifling. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-22305/DS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
