A seldom seen authentic example of a Chinese executioner's sword, likely dated to the early-to-mid-1800s. The overall length is 50 1/2" and the blade length is just over 28". The blade has a Damascus pattern throughout and some etched decoration is visible. The heavy iron, down-turned, guard measures 7" across with simple turned over quillons. The iron grip is wrapped in a 20th century olive green cotton flat cord. The pommel features a circular iron ring measuring 3 1/2" in diameter. CONDITION: the blade has a pleasing gray patina with minor staining. The blade does show significant use and likely ended the lives of many Chinese offenders or their enemies. The current cord wrapping the grip shows light wear. The guard and pommel ring have an oxidized patina. (02-23943/BF). $600-1,000.
