Circa 1850s, China Trade. The black hexagonal box decorated overall with elaborate court scenes within dense floral borders. The hinged lid opening to an interior fitted with a tray of compartments, two with decorated lids. The front fitted with a single long drawer opening to a compartmentalized interior, center most depicting a Courtesan with attendants in front of a building framed by a conifer and bamboo trees raised on gilt metal paw feet. Each end fitted with a bale. The box and drawer escutcheons of oval brass form. The box is offered with many original game pieces. SIZE: 6" h x 14 1/2" l x 10 1/4" w. PROVENANCE: From the John Webber Estate of Bangor, Maine. CONDITION: some wear around edges of the box. Interior including game pieces in very good condition. Lacquer within the lid has cracked along the edges but remains stable. Otherwise good. (05-581/TG). $300-500.
