Circa 1770, probably Providence, Rhode Island. The secretary desk in three parts. The removable cyma-scrolled pediment having carved rosettes, urn and flame finials, and dentilated molding. The upper secretary case having scrolled doors with fluted pilasters flanking panels of highly figured ribbon mahogany, above candle slides. The interior fully fitted with valenced letter slots over, and flanking a bank of central adjustable shelves. The lower desk case having a slant lid over four boldly blocked and graduated drawers within a cock beaded case, and complex conforming base molding standing on conforming blocked Chippendale scrolled feet. The fallboard openign to reveal a highly developed fitted interior, centered by a block and shell carved prospect door flanked by valenced letter slots over a double bank of drawers. SIZE: 96" h x 42 3/4" w at widest molding. PROVENANCE: Originally from a Maine Estate. CONDITION: very good condition retaining a rich historic surface, finials are old but likely not original. Brasses are appropriate old replacements, some restoration to small pieces of molding on removable pediment. Three small patches to interior panel of proper left door to stabilize age cracks. Restoration to approximately 3" of bottom of feet. Some repair to drawer bottoms. (05-815/JJ). $10,000-15,000.
