A.W. SPIES.
Overall length: 38 3/8”. Blade length: 30 1/4". Tri-color blade has a single wide fuller with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over half the length of the blade. Etching includes a spray of arms with federal shield along with foliate & patriotic motifs. A ribbon near the hilt reads “A.W. SPIES WARRANTED”. There are 2 small etched white panels on each side of the blade. Silvered brass hilt with a large star on each languet. Plain guard with star & leaf decorated drop quillon. The knuckle bow is highly embellished with floral & foliate motifs. Eagle head pommel with plain backstrap. Carved certifiably antique ivory grip. Silver plated brass scabbard with engraved foliate motifs & American eagle. CONDITION: blade shows a light gray patina with expected overall wear. Hilt is a bit loose & slightly misshaped. The rear languet is missing the bottom 1/3. Silver plating is about 20% intact. Grip is undamaged. Scabbard shows a deep mustard patina with scattered areas of sliver plate remaining. There is a significant crack at the mid-point of the scabbard. (02-19185/BF). $1,200-1,700.
