HELMET & CARTRIDGE BOX.
1) HELMET. This piece of early American military headgear is totally made of leather. It has an M1821 style eagle on the front with a leather cockade above. It has an individually scaled chinstrap with star side buttons. A decorative chain loops from the top of the helmet across the front and from the top of the helmet across the back. There are silver bullion tassels attached to the right side of the chain. No maker’s label. A later wool pompom is included for display purposes. CONDITION: the helmet appears to have been blackened a few times. Some of the original finish has flaked away, but the underlying layer has been blackened and blends well. Much of the blacking has migrated to the eagle, chain & chinstrap, necessitating a good cleaning.
2) CARTRIDGE BOX. The cartridge box is leather with a round brass stud on the front. Both belt loops are partially detached and white paper residue is stuck to the front. The interior has 24 tin tubes and the closure is of the 1812 period. CONDITION: box shows heavy wear overall with substantial loss of finish. Interior tubes are complete & undamaged. (02-19563/BF). $1,400-2,200.
