HORSE HEAD HILT. Overall length: 37 9/16”. Blade length: 31 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller & gold highlighted etching on a blued field over 2/3 of its length. Etching includes foliate, patriotic & military motifs featuring a large American eagle, liberty cap on pole, & the goddess Liberty. Gilded brass hilt with oak leaf embellished languets. Plain guard with decorated disc quillon. Plain knuckle bow with a well-articulated horse’s head pommel with its mane extending more than half way down the backstrap. Bone grip with wire missing. Gilded brass scabbard engraved with oak leaves, an eagle & American shield. CONDITION: blade has a mottled overall patina with notable oxidation to the bluing & gilded etching. Corrosion is heavier near the ricasso. Hilt retains most of its original gilding. Grip shows a few tight cracks. Wire wrap is missing. Scabbard has several shallow dents and retains about 1/2 of its original gilding. (02-19232/BF). $3,000-4,000.
