FOR THE TOMPKINS BLUES. Overall length: 36 1/3”. Blade length: 30 2/3”. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various foliate & patriotic motifs. Hilt appears to be plated iron as it is silver in appearance but attracts a magnet. Turned crossguard w/ acorn finials & scallop shell languet. Elongated pistol grip pommel w/ carved certifiably antique ivory grip. Chain guard made from split rings. Iron scabbard w/ plated finish. Scabbard is decorated w/ foliate motifs throughout. Between the scabbard rings is a panel that reads, “Presented to CAPTAIN SAMUEL W. SEELY OF THE TOMPKINS BLUES by his fellow citizens as a token of esteem for his military discipline New York. Nov. 20th. 1833”. CONDITION: blade has a light gray cleaned finish. Etching is a bit weak. Hilt has an oxidized silver finish. Grip has minor chipping near the pommel. Scabbard also has a heavily oxidized silver finish. (02-14191/BF). $1,000-1,400.
