HONOR WINNER. This Civil War Sheble & Fisher cavalry saber is personalized to Congressional Medal of Honor winner, 2nd Lt. Andrew J. Lorish of the 1st NY Dragoons. Lorish was a law school graduate who was elected Justice of the Peace in Attica, NY in 1861. He enlisted on August 5, 1862 and quickly rose through the ranks to the rank of 2nd Lt. in the first NYD. He was awarded the Medal of Honor by Secretary of War Stanton for his heroic actions at the Battle of Winchester, VA. The sword itself is a US M1840 enlisted cavalry saber measuring 43 1/4" overall with a plain 35 1/2" blade marked at the ricasso "SHEBLE & FISHER PHILAD". Brass hilt with standard 2 branch guard. The pommel is engraved "A. J. Lorish 1st N Y Dragoons". Wire wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. Accompanying this fine sword is his GAR medal, GAR Delegate ribbon from the 28th Encampment in 1894, GAR pin and 2 NY staff buttons. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a large loose leaf binder containing information on 2nd Lt. Lorish and the 1st NY Dragoons including copies of letters from Lorish during the war. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with evidence of light sharpening. Hilt has a pleasing patina. Scabbard has a medium to dark gray mottled patina. (02-26272/BF). NON-GUN. $1,200-1,600.
