Cal. 72. S# 849 (1849). During the Civil War, the Union & Confederate attempted to procure Austrian muskets as war attrition accumulated & as Austria adopted breechloading conversions. This example is an interesting collection of features. Bbl. 32" rifled has barleycorn style front sight & Lorenz style 600m rear sight. Marked behind rear sight "BENTZ" appears to indicate gunsmith Bentz conversion of rifle from smoothbore to rifled musket. Bbl. also has "LV" proof, crossed out "29" over crossed out "12" & anchor proof on right side. Tubelock designed by Vincez Augustin of the Viennese Arsenal in the this time period after the Year of Revolutions. Musket white wood stock w/ brass curled triggerguard, sideplate & buttplate. Iron furniture including slotted ramrod. CONDITION: metal has gray dark patina appearance w/ light pitting & peppery oxidation throughout. Good wood finish w/ missing pin behind wedge & deep impressions to stock. Triggerguard has replacement front screw that doesn't seat top tang to stock properly. Fair bore shows strong rifling & darkness in the grooves. (01-22252/MD). ANTIQUE. $500-1000.
