This axe measures 15 3/4" in length and 8" across the head. The cutting edge is 2 3/4" long and langets extend 6 5/8" down from the top. The axe has a few illegible markings but the makers stamp appears to be "TERKS". Axes like this were produced primarily in England but many saw service in the American Civil War. Some axes of this general style are known with Navy Yard markings. CONDITION: the head has a uniform dark oxidized patina. The oak haft is a bit dry but remains quite solid. (02-18034/BF). $400-600.
