"WILLIAM BARNETTE". Cal 44. S# 600. This deluxe Samuel Hoggson engraved, Henry rifle was made mid 1862. William Barnette matches the name of a several Civil War soldiers who could have privately purchased this rifle as so many did. Though the frame appears original as engraved, the rosewood stock and engraved buttplate are both restorations/reproductions. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Winchester Collector article by Dave Beck, Variations of the Samuel J. Hoggson Engraved Henry. CONDITION: very good as restored, frame appears all original with about half of a restored silver plate remaining. Barrel is buffed and refinished and is renumbered incorrectly "6040", S# on tang is 600, factory error makes it look like 6040, but the "4" as punched through and replaced with "0", reproduction Henry 1000 yard sight. As noted stock & buttplate are reproductions. Mechanically fine, very good 6 land & groove rifled bore. (01-26369/JS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-14,000.
