Cal. 44. S# 5504. This honest survivor was made in 1864 and has all the characteristics proper for this 5th variant. Matching serial numbers are found on 24 3/8" octagon barrel, stock, and 2nd type pointed buttplate. Screws are properly unnumbered. The rear sight is the last transition graduated to 900 yards with added slide retaining screw. Sling swivels are mounted on the left side of stock and barrel. More Henrys were made in 1864 than any other year, estimated production at about 4000 with many being sold privately for use in the Civil War. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete and matching with exception of upper tang wood screw which is replaced and does not bind. Brass has smooth toned patina, iron is mottled dark grey with pitting. The proper 2-line barrel address is very good and all discernible. Stock is sound with about 1" sliver inset repair on the left side at tang. Mechanically fine with worn dark rifled bore. (01-26371/JS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-14,000.
