SWORD "LT J P WOOD, 56TH OVI". Import foot officer's sword patriotic etched 31" blade, shark skin grip, nicely inscribed in script on top of guard "1st lt. JP Wood Co. C, 56th Regt OV". Jeremiah P. Wood (1830-1863) Commissioned into Company "C" 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, November 7, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant. Jeremiah would not survive the war and die of disease September 17, 1863. CONDITION: good overall, blade is gray, cleaned with areas of pitting, etched motifs partially visible including large "US". Hilt is with medium mustard patina, traces of plating in protected areas. Accompanying scabbard has engraved brass mounts with the restored brass throat. PROVENANCE: Lifelong collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (02-22321/JS). $1,500-2,000.
