WITH CAL M 1865 STABLER ALTERATION. Cal. 52. S# 8174. This 1860 carbine was rebarreled and recalibrated by the Springfield Armory in 1866. Standard configuration of the Civil War model, 20" 6 land and groove rifled barrel, adjustable rear sight, top of breech: "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". Barrel marked M1865. Carbine was altered so it could be shot by direct loading not using loading magazine in stock. The Stabler device uses a pivoting flange forward of trigger to activate. The only other external difference is the shape of the hammer nose. Later model 1865 Spencer carbines would have 22" barrels with three land and groove rifling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 original 50 caliber rimfire cartridges, one with JG headstamp. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, complete and original, smooth metal patina, traces of blue on barrel, muted case color on frame & bright case color on protected areas of breech, crisp markings, stock has good "LCA" (Lucian C. Allin) inspector cartouche. Mechanically crisp, good 3 land & groove rifled bore. (01-28145/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
