LOADING RIFLE. Overall length: 30 1/2". Blade length: 25 1/2". The Merrill bayonet was one of the longest bayonets produced by the United States & is quite scarce today. The bayonet also fits the M1841 Mississippi rifle that excepts a saber bayonet. Single fullered yataghan style blade marked at the ricasso, “1862”. Brass hilt w/ 3 dots arranged in a triangle stamped on the crossguard. The flat of the grip is stamped, “G” just above the bbl. ring & “10400” further up the flat. The flat is also stamped, “5574” in sunken circular touch marks. Bird’s head style pommel. Iron spring & button. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a bright finish w/ a few scattered darkened areas & a sm. area of cleaned pitting 7" up from the tip. Hilt shows only minor wear overall. (02-14727/BF). $500-700.
