Cal. 58. S# NSN. Bbl. 12". This is the only percussion pistol made by Springfield Armory. 4000 were made from 1855-1857 originally with attachable stock which this survivor lacks. Its original purpose was to be used with stock as carbine when fighting as infantry and on horseback without stock as pistol. Standard configuration, 17.75" overall, brass furniture, 1855 dated barrel "VP / eaglehead” proofs. Lock ”U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" & "1855" at tail. Pistol utilized the Maynard tape primer system in lock like the model 1855 longarms. CONDITION: good to very good overall, original & complete, metal cleaned, Maynard primer door has been replaced with artificially colored one with barely visible stamped eagle, fits well. Crisp markings, stock has wear areas where stock was attached, discernible cartouche. Mechanics fine including Maynard devise. Crisp dirty rifled bore. (01-23286/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-1,800.
