A nice example of a private purchase, tarred linen kepi of the Civil War period. Kepis like this example were often worn for protection from the rain. They are not an issued item but many enlisted men as well as officers found them useful in the field. This example has a black finish over cream colored linen. There are Civil War period enlisted buttons terminating the leather chinstrap. There is an edged bound leather visor & tarred linen sweatband. The interior lining is tan colored cotton. CONDITION: there is cracking & minor losses to the finish on the outside of the hat. Chinstrap & visor remain solid. Lining is a bit tattered, particularly near the rear. (02-14208/BF). $800-1,400.
