PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Largo. S# 13320. Bbl. 6 1/4". In the last decade of the 19th century and moving into the early 20th century the Spanish military trialed and purchased a number of European semi-automatic pistols. The most successful was designed by the Count of Camp-Giro, the Model 1913 being the version ultimately selected for service use. A few years later, the improved 1913-1916 was introduced and used by the Spanish military until replaced by the Model 400 many years later. In all, Esperanza y Unceta made just over 13,000 M1913-16 pistols that were delivered in separated batches over several years. This particular gun was one of the last to have been assembled, formally accepted in early 1920. As true for all of these guns, the top of the slide is marked "CAMPO-GIRO" surmounting the patent reference and years of development 1904-1913. There is also a reference Esperanza y Unceta factory and its location in Guernica. Left side of frame marked "Pist.a aut.a mod. 1913-16" surmounting the S#. Fitted with coarsely checkered wooden panels and a bottom mag. release. The mag., whose follower is numbered "05683", has its left side marked with Spanish military acceptance, is drilled for 7-indicator holes, and has a pinned floorplate. MAGS: 1 8-rd. CONDITION: VG as arsenal refinished, later re-dip including all small parts such as the hammer, safety, and trigger that were previously case hardened. Grips dark oil soaked, the right panel having several patches of noticeably flattened diamonds. Mag. with good original finish. Dull bore with shallow rifling. Correct manual mechanics as concerns the safety and hammer fall. Mag. does not actuate the hold-open. A classic Spanish military pistol made near the end of the Campo-Giro production. (25-3426/LMA). CURIO. $1,500-2,250.
