GAME RIFLE. Cal. 416 Rigby. S#: Mauser S# 49792 found on bottom of action with stock removed, Rigby S# 4070 found on trigger guard bow (1913). The legendary African rifle that everyone aspires to own! The favorite of many professional hunters since it was first offered around 1911. This example has usual 24-1/2" heavy tapered two step round barrel with integral quarter rib. Rib holds original one standing two folding leaf express rear sights. Both sling eye and short front sight base are sleeved on but contoured to give smooth appearance. Front sight base is grooved for sight hood and holds small silver bead. Top of barrel is engraved "John Rigby & Co. 43 Sackville St. London. W.". Magnum length square bridge action has classic Rigby markings around receiver ring: ".416 BORE" "BIG GAME" "RIGBY-MAUSER". Mauser markings are also on sidewall. Bolt has unaltered handle and correct S#'s. Bottom of flag safety is gold inlaid "SAFE". Long cocking piece is fitted with Rigby patent pop-up peep sight. Drop box bottom metal with large heavy hinged floorplate has release button in trigger guard bow and Rigby S# on outside of bow. Trigger is of single stage. European walnut steel capped pistol grip stock measures 14-1/4" over Silver type pad over 1-1/2" wood extension with incised lines at joint. Stock features steel grip cap with trap (empty), point pattern grip checkering, uncheckered forend and reinforcing stock bolt. MEASUREMENTS: WEIGHT: 9 lb. 11 oz. CONDITION: fine as restored. Metal retaining nearly all of a good quality rust blue. Markings and sharp edges somewhat softened. Stock retains most of an old refinish with some light marks. It has been glass bedded and is sound with wood restoration in epoxy behind trigger guard tang. Bore is fine with strong rifling throughout; a bit dark in grooves. Mechanically fine. A solid usable example of what many consider to be the "Holy Grail" of rifles. (25-2454/MGM). CURIO. $15,000-30,000.
