ACTION. Cal. 270 Win. (consignor states). S# 791 (found on bolt root). The 1916 Newton action incorporates the times latest technology with interrupted screw thread locking lugs, turned down bolt handle and rotating safety in bolt shroud. The early actions like this one are very nicely machined with two raised squares on receiver ring and bridge. Triggers are double set and the original rifles could be taken down with hinged floorplate acting as handle for removal of front stock bolt. This attractive rifle has been rebuilt with addition of 23-1/2" heavy tapered barrel fitted with Williams front ramp with gold bead and banded on sling eye. Action has been fitted with Lyman 48 receiver sight. Bolt body and extractor are engine turned. Bolt knob has checkered panels. This and the classically styled pistol grip stock appear to be the work of Griffin & Howe. Stock features scroll engraved pistol grip cap, M70 type steel buttplate, right hand shadow line cheekpiece, horn forend tip and well cut point pattern checkering at grip and around forend. CONDITION: very fine as mostly refinished. Metal parts retaining nearly all of a very nicely done rust re-blue. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original oil finish with many scratches and marks. Checkering is somewhat worn. There are plugged screw holes in top of barrel at center and breech end. Action has been glass bedded. Takedown feature no longer works. (25-549/MGM). CURIO. $1,500-2,000.
