These attractive posters represent an appeal to the American public to support their country & the Red Cross during the First World War.
1) This poster features a vibrant portrait of Joan of Arc in armor w/ upraised sword. It is titled: "Joan of Arc Saved France" "Women of America Save Your Country" "Buy War Savings Stamps". United States Treasury Department. The slogan area also has the boxed "W.S.S. War Savings Stamps" logo This poster has a blue background w/ Joan of Arc in shining armor standing under a beam of light. Poster is signed Haskell Coffee & is marked in lower right "THE UNITED STATES Printing & Lithograph Co. New York.". Marked in lower left corner s-1. CONDITION: poster is in very good condition w/ sm. tears & edge wear on the white margin & light staining along margin. 2 missing pieces in upper right corner which do not detract from the appearance. Joan of Arc's face in poster has several tears approx. 1-2" in length & a sm. area of scuffing at the chin & beside the nose. Frame of poster is approx. 30 1/2"W X 41"L.
2) Large poster from the American National Red Cross titled "The Greatest Mother in the World" showing a half toned figure of a nurse in the uniform of the time cradling in her arms a severely wounded soldier on a stretcher. There is a large red cross in the background & the additional wording reads"Red Cross Christmas Roll Call Dec. 16-23rd". The poster is signed "A.E. FORINGER". Additionally marked in lower left corner "2XD-2 1918 by NATIONAL AMERICAN RED CROSS". Poster has numerous sm. tears at the margin & sm. areas of light staining. Glass front has missing chip and sm. crack. Frame is approx. 28 1/2"W X 42 1/2" L.
3) Poster from the YMCA showing a half toned portrait of General John S. "Blackjack" Pershing in uniform by Samuel Johnson Woolf date March 1918. The message below portrait states in part "I wish unreservedly to commend its work for the army". Message came in a cable from France date August 21, 1918. The poster is labeled at bottom United War Work Campaign Nov. 11-18, 1918. The poster is approx. 22 1/2" W X 33 1/2" L in a professional mounted in a glass fronted frame. CONDITION: poster has light staining & sm. tears around edge areas w/ several missing spots.
4) Interesting poster in deep red color format showing the wreckage of the Statue of Liberty w/ NY City skyline in flaming ruins & flight of bombing planes over head. Print is marked underneath "Joseph Pennell Del." & "Alco-Gravure Inc. N.Y." The slogan states "THAT LIBERTY SHALL NOT / PERISH FROM THE EARTH / BUY LIBERTY BONDS / FOURTH LIBERTY LOAN".
CONDITION: poster mounted in a professional red colored metal frame with a glass front. Measuring 22 1/2"W X 33 1/2"L. Poster has slightly yellowed appearance w/ light staining & edge wear w/ professional restoration of the torn lower left corner.
5) Large polychrome poster from the U.S. Treasury promoting the purchase of War Saving Stamps. This poster shows the figure of Uncle Sam in a tellers window w/ a "W.S.S." sign overhead selling stamps to a group of men & women of diverse ethnic backgrounds. It includes a sm. child holding the American flag in the foreground. The slogan in the poster reads "BUY UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT WAR SAVINGS STAMP' & is stated at the lower edge "Your Money Back With Interest from the UNITED STATES TREASURY". Marked in the lower right corner "REPRODUCED BY THE STROBRIDGE LITHO. CO. CINNINATI & NEW YORK". Poster is mounted in professional silver colored frame and measures approx. 40 1/2" W X 30 1/2" L. CONDITION: poster in good legible condition w/ light tears & staining in margin areas.
