REVOLVER. Cal. 22 LR. S# 333MES. Bbl. 4 3/4" Mfg. 1970 in celebration of Maine's Sesquicentennial; 3,000 units. Gold plated cylinder frame, loading gate, barrel, ejector housing, grip frame screws and base pin; balance is nickel plated. Smooth simulated pearl grips with gold Colt medallions plus scroll engraving on butt. Maine entered the union in 1820 as a free state under the Missouri Compromise with Missouri as a slave state. In 1970 number 1MES was offered as a gift to Maine's Democrat governor, Kenneth Curtis; not being pro gun, he refused it allowing the president of Colt to have it along with the president's normally reserved number 2. Later in the history of this variation, 1MES and 2MES came together to be offered as a pair by J&G Rifle Ranch through an ad in The Shotgun News (approx. 1972). Much later (approx. late 1980's), it was discovered that #1 and #2 were almost completely destroyed beyond the point of being able to be restored making #3 the lowest numbered example. The idea for the Maine commemorative was suggested to Colt representatives by Calvin Glazier who worked for a relatively large and well known firearms retailer (Ft. Western Tire Co.) in the state's capitol (Augusta). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: native Maine pine Colt branded wooden presentation case also having state outline and Sesquicentennial markings on lid. Outlined (revolver and broach-like Maine lobster) royal blue velvet base plus dark blue (state flag color) satin with gold embellishments as on top of lid, under lid. Maine (cast metal) gold plated lobster likeness. Case lid hinges hand separate to allow a more varied display. Occasional very light marks on case lid. CONDITION: all aspects near excellent appearing new and unfired. (24-4818/NW). CURIO. $500-750.
