REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 77471. Bbl. 5". Model 1849 Pocket single action percussion revolver mfg. by Colt in 1853. The top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with Colt's New York City address at the breech. Left side of frame is marked "COLTS/ PATENT". Cyl. is engraved with Colt's stagecoach scene. Silver plated brass trigger guard with 1-piece smooth wood grip. Matching numbers are present on the frame, cyl. base pin, cyl., bbl., bbl. wedge, loading lever, trigger guard, and rear grip strap. Approximately 3/4 of the hammer screw has broken off, with the bottom 1/4 remaining in place and retaining the hammer. Bbl. wedge screw is a contemporary replacement. CONDITION: metal components exhibit a gray patina, with some scattered marks and indentations, as well as some areas of darker discoloration. Loading lever retains some of its original factory blue finish, with the bbl. wedge retaining some of its original factory nitre bluing in protected area. Brass trigger guard retains fair amounts of its original silver plated finish, which has turned a dark gray patina. Very bright bore, exhibiting scattered areas of mild pitting and strong rifling throughout. Grip shows some scattered marks from handling and storage, as well as some flaking to the varnish, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. A used, but cared for revolver that, with a couple of proper period replacement screws, will make for nice and honest example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver. (01-24456/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-900.
