REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER. Cal. 44. S# 77828. Bbl. 8". Model 1860 Army single-action percussion revolver, mfg. by Colt in 1862. Top of the bbl. is marked with Colt's address, with "DD" stamped on the left (just to the right of the bbl. wedge screw) and "A" on the right. "COLT'S/ PATENT" marked on the left side of the frame. Cyl. exhibits Colt's naval engagement scene, with matching "DD" and "A" inspector proofs stamped on the side. Underside of trigger guard is stamped with an "H" inspector proof. Frame, cyl., bbl., loading lever, bbl. wedge, and slotted rear grip strap are polished in-the-white. Hammer exhibits a case-color hardened finish. Brass trigger guard. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece smooth wood grip, which exhibits a faint cartouche on either side. All numbers are matching and include the frame, cyl., cyl. base pin, bbl., bbl. wedge, as well as the trigger guard and rear grip strap. A small steel band has been added to the front of the cyl., just below the bbl. Springfield Research does not list this S# but indicates that S# 77827 was issued to the 7th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry on 06/16/65, with S# 77831 being issued to the 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on "11 62". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: period brown leather holster. CONDITION: iron components retain a high gloss polished exterior, with scattered spots of pitting and age-related discoloration overall. Rear grip strap exhibits some light surface oxidation. Factory markings remain largely sharp and legible. Brass trigger guard had been cleaned at one time and retains a light patina. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of pitting while retaining strong rifling throughout. Action functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Wood grip is very good overall, exhibiting some scattered marks from handling and storage, with a chip present on the bottom right corner on the right side. Holster remains mostly malleable, exhibiting age-related cracking and crazing, with losses to the exterior finish primarily on the flap. Toe plug is present. Brass fittings exhibit a pleasing brown patina. (01-25469/MLW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,400.
