Cal. 38 Colt. S# 17148. Bbl. 6". Model 1889 Navy double action revolver mfg. by Colt in 1892 and subsequently converted into the Model 1895 configuration. The left side of the bbl. is marked "COLT. D.A. 38", with Colt's address above "PATENTED AUG.5.1884 NOV.6.88. MAR.5.95." stamped across the top. Left side of frame, cyl., cyl. crane, cyl. latch, and underside of bbl. exhibit a "C" within a star proof, with the bbl. exhibiting a "P" above the star proof. Butt is marked "U.S.N./ (ANCHOR)/ 38D.A./ (TRIDENT)/ No/ 6445/ N.C.T./ 17148". Metal components exhibit a lustrous blue finish, which was reapplied at the arsenal at the time of conversion. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered "COLT" black hard rubber grips. Half-moon blade front sight with "U" frame notched rear sight. All assembly numbers are matching and include the frame, cyl., cyl. crane, cyl. latch, and underside of bbl., with the grips matching via a hand inscribed "148" on the interior of the panels. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their period reapplied arsenal blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray and brown patinas, scattered handling marks, some concentrated areas of pitting (primarily on the bbl.), as well as spots of light to mild surface oxidation overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting some light surface oxidation, a couple small spots of pitting, and strong rifling throughout. Grips are good, exhibiting mild smoothing, some scattered handling marks, as well as a few minor nicks to the diamonds, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. (24-1071/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-1,000.
